It's Not My Car – The Participation Factor
Why do behavioral safety programs “lose steam” or never get off the ground to begin with? Inevitably, I typically find the program is run by the safety department and few anointed safety enthusiasts and supervisors whose observations compete with mounds of other paperwork. Employee involvement is nonexistent. In this talk I’ll ask you to consider the pride of ownership an employee-owned behavioral safety program. Workers are the right people to involve in this way because they know firsthand where hazards exist, where at-risk behaviors occur, and where attitudes affect safe work practices. We will learn about the positive side effects to employee ownership in behavioral safety from published research and real-life best-practices from the best employee teams. Through stories and real-world examples, we’ll take a journey through ownership, self-determination, and discretionary behaviors. Discover what pizza deliverers and oil refineries have in common.
